Implements a Marriage Penalty on Tax Return Filings Senate #51

Vote Description

This was a vote on amendment #26 to S.2397, the Senate Tax Reform Package. This amendment forces married couples filing jointly on federal tax returns to also file jointly on state tax returns in any given year, creating a “marriage penalty.” A marriage penalty seeks to tax couples who normally would not be taxed if they were not married. In this case, the millionaires tax would count toward a couple’s combined income, even if they didn’t earn a million dollars as individuals.
